From West Cork beaches to accessible wilderness routes

Growing up outdoors

Síle grew up in West Cork spending summers exploring coastal paths and moorlands. Those early years shaped everything — she developed a genuine love for Ireland's landscapes and, more importantly, realised that not everyone could access them the same way.

She studied Environmental Management at University College Cork, graduating in 2008. But studying wasn't enough. She wanted to work directly with the land, with the people, with the trails themselves.

The realisation that changed everything

After graduating, Síle worked with the Irish Wildlife Trust for a few years. Good work, meaningful work. But she kept noticing the same thing: older walkers were being left out. Trails that could've been perfect for them weren't. Not because of the terrain — because nobody had thought about accessibility from the start.

In 2014, she joined the National Parks and Wildlife Service as an accessibility consultant. That's when things clicked. She began conducting detailed assessments of popular trails, working with park management teams to implement sustainable modifications that didn't compromise the wilderness experience.

The breakthrough moment

2018 was the turning point. Síle spearheaded the complete redesign of Ballycroy's boardwalk system. It wasn't just about widening paths or lowering gradients. She tested every section personally, talked to dozens of older visitors, understood what they actually needed versus what they were told they needed.

The results spoke for themselves — senior visitor numbers increased by 47% while ecological integrity stayed intact. More importantly, she proved something she'd always believed: accessible trails don't compromise wilderness experiences. They democratise them.

Where she is now

Today, Síle works with variholding Ltd as a Senior Trail Accessibility Specialist. She's guided over 3,000 seniors through Ireland's most challenging and rewarding landscapes. She consults on Connemara's Diamond Hill path, the Burren's complex loop system, and accessible wilderness routes across the country.

What still drives her is witnessing the transformative impact of nature on older walkers. She's convinced that the best trails aren't the ones that are easy — they're the ones that are accessible, that welcome everyone, that prove age isn't a barrier to real wilderness experience.

What Síle knows inside out

Over 16 years of field experience, direct consultation with national park authorities, and hands-on testing with older walkers across Ireland's most visited protected landscapes.

Boardwalk design and maintenance

Síle designed and refined Ballycroy's boardwalk system, creating sustainable routes that handle wet moorland without damaging ecosystems. She understands load ratings, drainage, seasonal maintenance, and how boardwalks actually age.

Terrain assessment and gradients

She's tested hundreds of walking routes in person, evaluating surface stability, slope angles, potential hazards, and recovery points. Her assessments consider real bodies — not just theoretical guidelines.

Route planning for Connemara, Ballycroy, and the Burren

She knows these landscapes intimately — Connemara's challenging topography, Ballycroy's exposed moorland, the Burren's unique limestone terrain. She's created guides for Diamond Hill, low-impact loops, and alternative routes when main paths aren't suitable.

Senior accessibility consultation

Síle understands mobility variations, energy management, joint stress, and confidence factors. She's worked with accessibility specialists, occupational therapists, and — most importantly — with actual older walkers to refine her approach.

Wilderness interpretation and ecology

Her environmental management background means she doesn't just make trails accessible — she helps visitors understand what they're seeing. The Burren's wildflowers, Ballycroy's blanket bog, Connemara's mountain ecology — she connects walkers to the landscape.

Group leadership and safety management

She's guided over 3,000 seniors through challenging terrain. She knows how to read a group, adjust pace, manage fatigue, handle weather changes, and make people feel safe without treating them as fragile.

What Síle believes about accessibility and wilderness

1

Accessible trails don't dilute wilderness

A well-designed boardwalk through a blanket bog isn't a compromise — it's thoughtful design. You're not making nature easier. You're making nature available. There's a difference, and it's important.

2

Older walkers know their own bodies

Síle doesn't infantilise older visitors. She provides information — gradient data, surface details, realistic time estimates — and trusts people to make their own decisions. Respect that autonomy. That's what good accessibility actually means.

3

Field testing beats theory every time

She doesn't design trails from an office. She walks them repeatedly, in different seasons, with different groups. Guidelines matter, but real bodies on real terrain tell you what actually works.

4

Connection to nature has no age limit

Some of Síle's most powerful moments have been watching a 75-year-old reach a mountain summit for the first time in decades, or a 68-year-old realise they could walk further than they thought possible. That transformation matters. It's worth building trails for.
